Engineer Sultan Jan Kaliwal, is one the key founders and active member of Paiwastoon community was born in Haska Meena district of eastern Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, on March 22, 1950, is a multifaceted personality known for his contributions in both engineering and literature. He pursued his primary and secondary education at Rahman Baba High School in Kabul, Afghanistan, graduating in 1969. His passion for understanding the earth’s structure led him to pursue higher education in geology. He got a Bachelor of Science from Kabul Polytechnic institute in 1976, followed by a Master’s degree in Geological Survey from Kabul Polytechnic University in 1980. His professional journey commenced as an Engineer Geologist in the Department of Geological and Mining Survey of Afghanistan, a division of the Ministry of Mining and Industries, in 1976. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to the exploration and understanding of Afghanistan’s geological landscape, contributing significantly to the country’s mineral survey and exploration efforts. In pursuit of enhancing his expertise, Sultan Jan embarked on practical education journeys abroad. He underwent training at the Geological Survey of India (GSI) across six centers between 1985 and 1987. Additionally, he enriched his knowledge further by attending sessions at the Atomic Energy Agency (United Nations) in Krakow, Poland, in 1988. Beyond technical endeavors, he is a prolific literary figure. His love for literature started from his early school years, where he began writing poetry in the 5th grade. Over the years, he delved into prose, becoming an accomplished writer by the time he reached the 8th grade. Throughout his life, he continued to pen poetry and prose, becoming a notable author of numerous books, presentations and articles published in various newspapers, magazines, and websites.

Sultan Jan Kaliwal’s life is a motivative pathway and example for the young generations who love literature and poetry. His dedication to geology has not only contributed to the understanding of Afghanistan’s geological heritage but has also inspired many in the field. Simultaneously, his literary pursuits have enriched Afghan culture and literature. He live with his family in greater Toronto area, Canada since 1997 and he remain an active member of community based activities through Paiwastoon Community organization alongside with other Afghan Canadians.
